Run back in time! Challenge yourself to a desert run in legendary settings. Starting in the ancient cave city of Petra, the Petra Desert Marathon leads runners past the incredible tombs, mountainside carvings, and caves before venturing into the arid, lunar-like landscapes of the Jordanian desert. Rich in history, culture and scenic nature, Jordan offers its visitors superb possibilities for an exciting adventure marathon. There is a full and a half marathon distance to choose from. PetraUnderstandably, the biggest attraction in Jordan is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra. Named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, this towering city of ruins contains lofty buildings carved directly into reddish sandstone cliffs. Petra was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom from 4th century B.C. until roughly 100 A.D., when Romans captured the city. After this, the city declined rapidly and was soon abandoned. It was left alone among the desert’s cliffs for centuries, until, in 1812, Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt pursued rumors of a lost city and persuaded his Bedouin guide to show him the secret path through the cliffs. Today, visitors can see hundreds of temples and tombs. Only the facades are visible, but the rooms actually extend far back into the depths of the stone. Petra also contains an extremely beautiful monastery, a huge circular amphitheater, and, of course, its most famous building: Al Khazneh, also known as The Treasury. This 40-meter-high, ornate façade is the first sight to greet visitors after the 1,2 km walk down the Siq – the narrow gorge that is the only entrance to Petra. With so much to see, a visit to Petra can easily consume several days. |
At the end of the Siq lies The Treasury, one of Petra’s most famous buildings. Originally built as a tomb, it is estimated to be over 2.000 years old.

We loved every minute of this amazing adventure. Great organisation throughout, the marathon itself was incredible, what fantastic way to explore this unique place. Thanks for such a wonderful experience.
The race and the adventure extension was an amazing experience, and I am so happy I went. I travelled alone and met some amazing people on the way - there were many opportunities to meet and make friends on this trip. The race itself was hard, but actually easier than I imagined, and a few concerns I had about my health I took up with the two amazing doctors on sight. The adventure extension was a fast-going way of seeing some truly amazing parts of this country, and everything was taken care of for us. The tour leaders were helpful and so friendly the whole way. I will definitely do another one of these races in the future.
